Aubrey Plaza attended a New York Liberty game alongside Patti LuPone just hours after opening up about her journey with grief following the death of husband, Jeff Baena
Actress Aubrey Plaza broke cover as she stepped out on Tuesday, August 19, eight months after the tragic death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena.
The Agatha All Along star attended the WNBA matchup between the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 19, 2025. Baena, 47, died by suicide in January, just four months after he and Plaza had separated following their 2021 marriage. Since his death, the actress has kept a low profile, making her courtside appearance a rare public outing.
Plaza was joined by Broadway legend Patti LuPone, her close friend and co-star from Agatha All Along. The pair were seen smiling, waving a flag, and meeting Liberty mascot Ellie the Elephant. The pair wore casual outfits for the sporting event.
The outing comes just hours after Plaza gave her first interview about Baenas passing. Speaking with former Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler on the Good Hang podcast, she described navigating her grief.
Just to get it out the way, people want to see you and want to see how you are, they love you. Youve had this terrible, terrible, tragic yearYou lost your husband, youve been dealing with that, and youve been looking for all different ways in which to feel and find support, Poehler said.
When asked how she was doing, Plaza responded, Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you. Overall, Im here and Im functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think Im okay, but its like a daily struggle.
She added, This is a really dumb analogy and it was kind of a joke at a certain point, but I actually mean it. Did you see that movie The Gorge? Its like [an] alien movie or something with Miles Teller.
“In the movie, theres like a cliff on one side and theres a cliff on the other side, then theres gorge in between, and its filled with all these like monster people that are trying to get them.
“I swear, when I watched it I was like, that feels like what my grief is like…or what grief could be like. At all times, theres like a giant ocean of awfulness thats like right there, and I can see it.
“Sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it. Then sometimes I just look at it, and sometimes I try to get away from it. But, its always there,” she expressed.
Her comments mark the first time she has publicly discussed Baenas death since a brief statement released through her representative in January.
This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time,” she said at the time.
In March, a Los Angeles County Medical Examiners report revealed the couple had separated in September 2024, months before his death. The documents also noted Plazas concerns for his well-being, including a welfare check she requested in October after he made troubling remarks.
The report confirmed Baena had been in therapy but had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his passing.
