Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton was involved in a car accident in North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon. Dalton, his wife Jordan, his three children and their dog were involved in the car at the time of the accident and it was reported that no one in the family needed to be transported by medical personnel.

The quarterback was evaluated by the Panthers medical staff as a result of the incident, and his status with regards to any potential injuries is currently uncertain. The Panthers are set to have practice on Wednesday so more updates regarding Dalton’s accident should be available when the team formally addresses the media.

Dalton and his family were heading west on Sardis Road in south Charlotte when the accident occurred, per the Queen City News. If the 36-year-old is unable to play in Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos, Bryce Young would be tabbed to start after initially losing his starting spot to Dalton.

After starting the 2024 NFL season losing its first two games against the New Orleans Saints and the Los Angeles Chargers, Carolina head coach Dave Canales decided to bench Young in favor of Dalton in hopes of turning the team’s odds around. Against the Las Vegas Raiders, the veteran signal-caller showed out, completing 26-of-37 pass attempts for 319 yards to go along with three touchdowns.

Since then, however, the Panthers have fallen back to Earth, losing their next four games, with their most recent loss being a 40-7 drubbing at the hands of the Washington Commanders. Despite how the Panthers have struggled despite a change in quarterbacks, Young continues to show his willingness to do what is needed to keep Dalton and the rest of the team’s spirits high.

Speaking with reporters after the Panthers’ loss to the Commanders, the young quarterback explained the unique position he found himself in and what he could do to be as supportive of Dalton as much as possible. “Anytime I get on the field, I’m grateful for that. I don’t take that for granted,” Young said, per ESPN.

“I feel for Andy in the situation [of not performing up to standard]. I’m doing stuff to help him, to be there for him, talking and trying to be as much help as I can on the sideline.”

And it wasn’t just Young doing what he could to help the team in any way he could. Dalton, for his part, explained to reporters after losing to Washington that the next thing the Panthers needed to do was to self-reflect and understand why unfavorable results kept happening to them to move forward with a plan.

“We have to put this behind us,” the veteran said, per USA Today. “But we have to look ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘Alright, why do these games keep going like this?’ I think that’s the biggest thing. For us, there are some many little details that we are gonna go back and look at and we’re gonna say we have to have certain things happen.

“We have to make sure we have a good understanding of everything that we’re doing. When you don’t, it turns out like it did (Sunday). We have to be honest and real and everybody has to do it. And I’m talking to myself, too.”

For now, it remains to be seen how the team will proceed and who will be starting against the Broncos after Dalton’s accident.
