ESPN commentator Joe Buck made an amusing Al Michaels reference as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Baltimore Ravens on “Monday Night Football”.

The Ravens secured a dominant 41-31 win over the Bucs behind Lamar Jackson’s tremendous five touchdowns, while Baker Mayfield lost both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to injury. Baltimore began to pull away in the third and fourth quarter, although Tampa showed fight to stay in the game with a flurry of late scores.

The Bucs had railed 41-18 with 6:32 left following a Ravens touchdown, but they rallied with two straight scores to make it a 10-point game. With just under two minutes remaining, the Bucs scored to close the gap to 10, which may have led to some uncomfortable moments for Ravens fans.

With Tampa kicker Chase McLaughlin lining up for a field goal, Buck suggested it wasn’t just Ravens fans but sports bettors who were stressing about the closing stages. He quipped: “Al Michaels is having dinner tonight at Toscana in LA. If he had this headset on, he’d say there are some people starting to sweat the end of this game out… but that’s Al.”

The joke by Buck was largely received positively, although some of the reaction was mixed. Toscana is an Italian restaurant in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, and Buck revealed the legendary sportscaster was enjoying a meal there.

“Joe Buck just doxxed Al Michaels?” wrote one fan on X. Another took issue with the call though, adding: “Joe Buck blowing Al Michaels peaceful dinner cover was so uncool.”

Buck was wittily alluding to the betting line for the game; the Ravens closed as a 4.5-point favorite at many sportsbooks, so the Buccaneers could have feasibly made it a four point game with a defensive stop and another touchdown. The game ended 41-31 as Baltimore covered.

Many fans enjoyed the Michaels reference, as the sportscaster has been known to make subtle gambling references at the end of games. The 79-year-old knows the point spread or point total for every game he covers, and used to reference the line back when sports betting was illegal to the amusement of watching fans. However, the NFL has since embraced gambling, which has limited Michaels’ fun.

“I had more fun during the time when you weren’t supposed to make any reference to gambling, where I was kind of like the rascal and all that,” Michaels said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “People would say, ‘Well, the league is getting upset.’ Yeah, they’re getting upset, but in the meantime they know everybody’s betting. So it’s like, ‘You shouldn’t do that, but we’re gonna turn a blind eye to it.’

“Now, everybody’s doing it. People are betting on 3rd-and-4. I can still sneak in those things I was able to sneak in in the past, but it’s not as if I’m a rascal anymore.”
