Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets’ 2024 NFL season is more than likely over, despite the quarterback sending a message to the team in hopes of energizing the squad.
New York lost its fifth straight game Sunday, losing to the Patriots, 25-22, despite New England having to rely on backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett after rookie quarterback Drake Maye was ruled out with a concussion. Maye was hit in the head by Jamien Sherwood, with the team confirming the rookie had suffered a concussion.
At the time of Maye’s injury, the Jets were leading by a score and looked to be on their way to snapping their losing streak. Even as the fourth quarter got underway, the Jets held a 16-14 lead, though considering Rodgers’ experience, a victory was all but assured.

Instead, the Jets were upset by Brissett and the Patriots as with 25 seconds left in the game, New England running back Rhamondre Stevenson scored. The Patriots snapped their six-game losing streak and, coincidentally, gave them the same record as the Jets, despite New York beating them earlier in the season.
In the same vein, many pundits believed that if New York fell to New England, that essentially would doom the Jets’ season. James Jones, a former Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver who played with Rodgers, claimed that if the Jets couldn’t get past the lowly Patriots, it was time to call an end to the season.
“There’s going to be so many questions in New York if they lose this game and you fall to 2 – 6. I’m not going to lie, those are my brothers, we FaceTimed them and all on the show, those are my brothers,” Jones said during an appearance on “The Facility.” “If you go to 2-6 that’s a wrap.

“I don’t care about no 2 percent chance or none of that, it’s a wrap. Now, as you’re taking the field, how can I stay healthy so I can get to Cabo and chill with the girly or wife, whatever, because it’s over. You’re not going to the playoffs. There’s too many solid teams in the AFC that you ain’t going to be able to climb back up the hill.”
Furthermore, the Jets’ loss indicated that Rodgers’ message to the team before the game went unheeded. Speaking to reporters before New York’s loss, Rodgers explained how the team is close to a breakthrough, though the players themselves are the ones holding the team back.
“It’s like the story of cutting down a tree, and it’s the final blow that actually fells the tree but you might not see the first thousand hacks at it,” he said. “Sometimes it just takes that one thing to happen, it could be a speech before a game, after a game, something during the week that just clicks, and the energy of that click can be contagious.
“What you do is you try and set up a lot of different things that are part of the structure and the foundation of a winning culture, but until each of those things clicks in, you’re fighting against some of the ghosts of years past, and it’s in every organization, it’s in every season.”
Of note, the Jets fired head coach Robert Salah and traded for star receiver Davante Adams in hopes of bolstering the team and giving some semblance of life to New York. Additionally, fans noted that Rodgers had a lower winning percentage as Jets starter than Zach Wilson.
Wilson compiled a .352 win percentage before moving onto the Denver Broncos while Rodgers sits at .333.
