Aaron Rodgers told New York Jets fans that they should expect the team to be competing for a Super Bowl this year after returning from his injury… a prediction that he’ll probably regret making now.

In pre-season Rodgers told reporters: “The goal is New Orleans (the home of this year’s Super Bowl). It has to be the goal. The beauty is, every single year there’s eight to 12 teams, maybe probably less, but 8-12 teams that can actually do it. We’re one of those eight to 12.”

Coming into the 2024 season, the Jets had actually been seen as the favorites to win the AFC East above the Buffalo Bills – who look set to win 10 more games than them in the regular season while the Jets look like they’ll stumble into a 4-13 record.

The Jets’ season could not have gone much worse this year, making all-in moves to acquire Davante Adams and his huge contract while still struggling to win, with Rodgers’ future is looking as unpredictable as ever.

Although Rodgers‘ numbers have not been that unimpressive in isolation, many fans believe the quarterback’s days as an elite player to be over with many Jets fans wanting to see them turn a new page and bring in a new player at the position.

The Jets will once again be rebuilding this offseason, looking to find a new general manager while already beginning their search for a new head coach, as well as potentially a new quarterback.

But if they are going to look to rid themselves of Rodgers, they may find it hard to do so financially, with the 41-year-old set to be under contract through the 2025 season.

The Jets can cut him and spread his salary cap for the next few years – having to eat a $14 million dead cap this year with further money down the line, or they could use 2025 as a lost season and have the entirety of his dead cap against them while looking to go again in 2026.

Whatever the case, the Jets might find it difficult to find a replacement for Rodgers this offseason. There looks to be a lack of options to be available at the position, with Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward seen as the only starting caliber players in the draft who will likely be selected before them.
