The New York Jets have traded wide receiver Mike Williams to the Pittsburgh Steelers, receiving a 2025 fifth-round pick for the veteran.
The trade brings Williams’ time in New York to an end despite only signing a one-year contract on March 19 after being released by the Los Angeles Chargers. Williams played just six games for the Jets, making 12 catches for 166 yards and no touchdowns.
Williams will now head for a fresh start in Pittsburgh, with the Steelers finally landing a receiver to partner George Pickens. The Steelers have been surveying the market for some time, but with the team top of the AFC North with a 6-2 record, there was no better time to bolster the roster.
Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers lost his cool with Williams during the game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6, as the receiver appeared to run the wrong route and his pass was intercepted. Although Rodgers attempted to make amends for publicly calling Williams out, the following day the Jets traded for Davante Adams and made a clear statement.

Williams was the target on that play, and Rodgers slammed the receiver for not running the correct route. The quarterback attempted to clear the air in his weekly segment on “The Pat McAfee Show” but made things worse after bringing Adams into the frame moments after his trade to the Jets was announced.
“I wasn’t calling Mike out for anything but his responsibility and the details on that play,” Rodgers said. “I have a lot of love and respect for Mike. He does some nice things for us. On that play, he wasn’t in the right spot. You can make more of that if you want to, but we all should be held to a standard.”
After the loss to the Bills, and learning that the Jets had traded for Adams after agreeing a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, Williams missed two days of practice due to “personal reasons” before returning. Williams then revealed that he had a private meeting with Rodgers to discuss the incident against the Bills.
Williams claimed that he was not upset by what Rodgers had said and promised to “be on the red line” moving forward, referencing lines used for receivers in practice. Williams was back in for the next game against the Pittsburgh Steelers but dodged a question surrounding his future.
“I’m where my feet at,” Williams said after being asked where he might end up before the game. “That’s the main thing for me. I came h
