Aaron Rodgers has been told he could be in legitimate danger of being cut by the New York Jets should he continue to struggle the way that he has so far this season.

The Jets traded for Rodgers in hoping he’d be the final piece to the puzzle, elevating one of the best rosters in football into playoff contention… but it hasn’t quite worked out that way so far. After playing just four snaps in 2023 before suffering a season-ending Achilles tendon tear, Rodgers has not looked the same player since returning this season – with the offense mightily struggling through their first seven games.

The Jets have now lost four games in a row while having a 2-5 record, with Rodgers being eighth in the NFL in passing yards and throwing just 10 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He is also having his lowest completion rate in 10 years while ranking 24th in the league in QBR.

And despite him being under contract for 2025, speculation has begun to grow on his future. Fans have discussed the potential of him walking away from the game – or even if the Jets could cut him.

ESPN reporter Rich Cimini discussed Rodgers’ situation on the “Flight Deck with Rich Cimini” podcast. He believes there’s a chance Rodgers doesn’t return to New Jersey in 2025 due to his questionable form, and he’s raised concerns about his fitness. Rodgers will celebrate his 41st birthday in December and the 20th anniversary of drafting next spring.

The Jets simply outright cutting Rodgers would be a costly move – seeing him count for $60 million of their salary cap, being spread out over the next four years. Alternatively, the Jets could decide to eat $49 million in dead salary cap space in 2025 while being free from his contract in 2026.

Talks and speculation around his future have come just one day after his former Jets head coach in Robert Saleh joined his previous team in the Green Bay Packers – helping the team offensively after being fired from his position in New York.

The Packers have benefitted greatly from the Rodgers trade, having Pro Bowl quarterback Jordan Love as a ready-made replacement, while now bringing in Saleh to assist him – giving Green Bay another advantage heading into the rest of the season in gaining the assistance of Saleh’s defensive mind.

“Yeah, I think it helps,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said on Saleh’s presence. “Having a defensive mind talking offense and helping us with things he might be able to see, kind of similar scheme stuff, things the defense might be looking for, it helps.”

He added: “I think he’s got an elite defensive mind. But that’s why I want him on the offensive side, so he can help us attack the defenses.”
