After weeks of increasing pressure from fellow Democrats, President Joe Biden announced on July 21 that he would withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Shortly after, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take up the mantle. The announcement triggered an overwhelming wave of support for Harris’s candidacy, with her campaign raising over $50 million in just a day.
In her response, Harris expressed gratitude for Biden’s leadership, stating, “On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country. I am honored to have the President’s endorsement, and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”
Musicians quickly rallied behind Harris, reversing a trend of tepid celebrity support for Biden’s reelection. Stars like Ariana Grande, Cardi B, and John Legend publicly endorsed her candidacy. Charli XCX even proclaimed, “Kamala IS brat,” highlighting the enthusiasm surrounding her campaign.
Taylor Swift added her voice to the chorus of support after the presidential debate on September 10, posting on Instagram, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
As the election date approaches, more endorsements are expected, while some artists like Jason Aldean and Kid Rock may continue to support Donald Trump, the Republican nominee. Billboard will keep updating the list of those backing Harris as the campaign progresses.
