Ja’Marr Chase Shines in Bengals Victory, Dodges Baby Oil Question
Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase played a pivotal role in securing the team’s first win of the season with a spectacular 63-yard touchdown catch during the second quarter. This crucial play not only gave the Bengals a lead they wouldn’t relinquish but also showcased Chase’s exceptional ability to gain yards after the catch.
The play itself wasn’t a deep bomb, but rather a short 13-yard reception that Chase turned into a 63-yard touchdown, evading defenders and slipping through tackles with ease. His agility and quickness after the catch left defenders grasping at air, leading one reporter to ask a playful question during the post-game press conference: “Were you wearing baby oil?”
The question referenced a story Chase had shared in a 2023 interview with The Athletic about his father’s pre-game ritual when Chase was a kid. Chase explained that his father would rub baby oil on him before games to make him harder to tackle.
“[My dad] just said, ‘Come here,’” Chase recalled. “Then he rubbed hella baby oil on me. He used to do it almost every game. Then he told me don’t touch myself,” Chase joked at the time.
However, the baby oil question took an unexpected turn when the reporter brought it up, as it reminded many of a recent unrelated controversy involving Sean “Diddy” Combs, who had been in the headlines due to his arrest. The association between baby oil and Diddy seemed to catch Chase off guard, and he responded with a witty and quick remark.
“No, I wasn’t wearing baby oil,” Chase said with a laugh. “We gotta keep that for somebody else. That’s not my question right there. I did do it as a kid, though. You can’t even ask that no more, bro. There’s too much going on in life right now with that.”
The humorous moment was a light-hearted conclusion to a strong performance from Chase, who finished the game with three catches for 85 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals’ 34-24 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
Through the first four games of the 2024/25 NFL season, Chase has already tallied 19 catches for 300 yards and three touchdowns, proving once again why he’s one of the most dangerous wide receivers in the league.
Selected by the Bengals with the 5th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Chase has quickly become one of the cornerstones of the team’s offense, known for his explosive plays and ability to make something out of nothing.
