New angles of Tyrod Taylor’s touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson shows Aaron Rodgers applauding his back-up quarterback while showing his support for the team that might be looking to move him in just a matter of days.
Rodgers future with the New York Jets remains unclear, with reports suggesting that he could be cut after the season with the organization looking to rebuild with a new general manager, quarterback and head coach – a familiar territory for Jets fans.
Rodgers, intriguingly, took himself out of the game with the Jets down 30 to the Buffalo Bills, telling interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich that he should put Taylor in with the veteran rarely seeing the field this season. Minutes later, Taylor led the Jets down the field before finding Garrett Wilson in the endzone, with Rodgers seen clapping.
Rodgers then spoke to Taylor after he came off the field as they discussed the plays and defenses that the Bills had been running, with the legendary quarterback appearing to act as a mentor to him.
Later, Taylor lead another impressive drive down the field while completing a touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Conklin for another score. The Jets have not yet confirmed which quarterback will play this weekend, in what could be Rodgers’ final game of his career with the organization… and potentially in the NFL.
The 41-year-old quarterback learned this week that he’s almost sure to be cut from the team this offseason, with the aforementioned Wilson said to be wanting to be traded should Rodgers stay.
Rodgers and Wilson have not been on the same page this season, with the emerging superstar receiving unhappy with his targets this season, said to have aired his grievances on net receiving the ball when he’s open.
Rodgers is set to be under contract through the 2025 season, but the Jets can cut him and spread his salary cap for the next few years – having to eat a $14 million dead cap this year and $7 million for the following two years afterwards.
The Jets might find it difficult to find a replacement for Rodgers this offseason though, with a lack of serviceable options to be available.. The could potentially trade up to acquire one of Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward in the draft, while also maybe looking to swing a trade for a veteran or current back-up.
