For New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, making it to the World Series was reportedly enough for him to secure his job in the Bronx. Boone was heavily criticized for his decisions throughout the World Series, leading to the Los Angeles Dodgers winning their eighth Comissioner’s Cup trophy.
Boone and the Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Guardians, meeting the reported job-safety requirement, according to SNY TV. But Boones strategies against the Dodgers angered the New York fanbase, who’ve spent the last seven seasons seeing him coach the team to a 58.4 percent winning rate.
Every manager decision is magnified in the depths of the postseason, and for Boone, several key decisions drew heavy complaints online. He was criticized for his decision to pitch Nestor Cortes after giving up a Grand Slam to Freddie Freeman in Game 1.
Boone was also under fire for his batting order choice, putting third baseman Jazz Chisholm on cleanup duty despite not recording a hit in 17 at-bats with runners in scoring position. He also decided to continue pitching to Freeman throughout the series, which resulted in MVP honors after he recorded four home runs, six hits, and 12 RBI.
The Game 5 meltdown left fans fuming. Three errors included a costly glove interference, a pitching balk, and Aaron Judge’s dropped routine fly ball. Yankee fans went on social media to say the Yankees should prioritize the re-signing of slugger Juan Soto, a more disciplined focus on defense, and the immediate firing of Boone.
A Yankees fan on X wrote, “I will never watch another Yankee game until Aaron Boone is gone. Six years without a World Series is enough. You fired our beloved Joe Girardi like it was nothing.” More blame was dished on Boones choice to bring in an injured Cortes in Game 3 instead of reliever Tim Hill. A New York fan identified that moment and said, “The entire series ended there.”
X comments even joked about a potential fan “riot” at Yankee Stadium if Boones dismissal wasnt announced by the morning after the loss. Another fan sarcastically said, I dont even want to see Aaron Boone in a Yankees hat to walk his dog next season.
Boone signed his three-year contract in 2022, with an option for the club after the 2025 season. His contract allows the Yankees front office to secure Boones long-term future or reevaluate after the loss.
After the loss, all Boone said to the media regarding his job status was, “We’ll see. I don’t know.” Should New York decide not to activate their team option, the Yankees would have to focus on finding a new manager to correct the team’s blatant flaws.
