CNN — In travel news this week, Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on air traffic and travel plans across the Southeast, while a different kind of storm brews in San Francisco Bay. Additionally, we’ve gathered flight attendants’ etiquette tips and explored the delightful world of waffles.
The Name Game
In May, the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport rebranded to the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, leading to confusion among travelers. With San Francisco International Airport just 30 miles away, the Port of Oakland intended the change to highlight Oakland as a gateway to the Bay Area. However, travelers have reported showing up at the wrong airport, prompting San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu to file a trademark lawsuit against Oakland. Chiu accuses Oakland of intentionally creating confusion, while Oakland’s attorney has countered with claims of anti-competitive bullying. Regardless of the lawsuit’s outcome, this serves as a reminder to triple-check airport names and locations to avoid mix-ups—nobody wants to end up in Bucharest instead of Budapest!
News in the Air
A social media trend of arranging belongings in security check-in bins has emerged, raising concerns about longer lines at departure terminals. Despite its aesthetic appeal, travelers might want to keep efficiency in mind.
Frequent flyer programs can provide access to airport lounges and upgrades, but the lack of transparency around miles and points often leads to frustration. The Department of Transportation is currently investigating major frequent flyer programs for potential unfair or deceptive practices.
Travel Etiquette Tips from Flight Attendants
To reduce stress at the airport, ensure your bag meets the weight limit before checking it. Our partners at CNN Underscored recommend luggage scales to help with this.
Living the Dream in Kritsa, Greece
Patricia Mahan and Dan Matarazzo, a couple previously based in Tucson, Arizona, made a significant life change by moving to Greece after living in Mexico. They purchased a charming stone house, formerly a bakery, in Kritsa for €137,000 (about $148,200) in 2023.
Mahan describes Kritsa as a traditional village filled with “kindness and generosity” from the locals, providing a fresh start that balances village life with access to amenities like medical facilities, farmers’ markets, and stores. They’ve embraced their new home while honoring its history and traditional style.
Wafflemania
Waffles, beloved in North America and Europe, have a history that may date back to ancient Rome. According to food scholar Giorgio Franchetti, waffles could be descendants of “crustulum,” sweet biscuits favored by the Romans. With their crispy texture and delightful taste, it’s the perfect time to whip up a batch of waffles topped with whipped cream and fruit—just for research, of course!
