Blake Porter just had the week of his life, and it all started with an unbelievable 94-foot putt during a Texas Tech basketball game—one that not only stunned the crowd but also caught the attention of Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes.
The Texas Tech student became an overnight sensation after draining a full-court putt during a commercial break at the Texas Tech vs. Houston basketball game on Monday. His celebration? A chest bump with Mahomes himself, who was sitting courtside watching the magic unfold.
But the surprises didn’t stop there.
Porter’s Big Moment on Today Show
On Thursday, Feb. 27, Porter appeared on the Today show, where he tried to recreate his viral putt. This time, he wasn’t quite as lucky, missing the long shot while standing outside on the NBC Plaza.
However, the Today show hosts had something even better in store—a special pre-recorded message from Patrick Mahomes that would change Porter’s life.
“What’s up, Blake?” Mahomes, 29, said in the video. “What an awesome moment it was the other night. I was so excited to be a small part of it. And I know you think you know what you won, but what you don’t know is that Texas Tech Athletics is going to be paying your tuition next fall.”
Porter’s jaw dropped in disbelief as his mother and girlfriend, both visibly emotional, stepped in to celebrate the unexpected gift.

An Extra Gift from Team Mahomes
As if free tuition weren’t enough, Mahomes added another surprise:
“Me and my sponsor, Adidas, are going to make you an honorary member of Team Mahomes, and we’re sending you a nice care package to help with your golf game.”
Overwhelmed by the generosity, Porter could hardly contain his excitement.
“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. Thanks guys!” he said, still processing the life-changing moment.
How Porter Ended Up on the Court
Before receiving the huge news, Porter shared the story of how he even got the opportunity to take the in-game putt challenge.
“I got to the game pretty late, around 5 p.m., and somehow, I got asked if I wanted to go down on the court and take a shot.”
Despite calling himself a “double bogey golfer at best,” Porter somehow sank the impossible putt—one that had the crowd erupting and Mahomes himself leaping out of his seat.
“As soon as the ball went in, I just thought, ‘I really want to celebrate, I like to chest-bump people, and there’s Patrick Mahomes.’”
Without hesitation, Porter ran toward Mahomes and delivered the celebratory chest bump seen around the world.
A New Friendship with Mahomes?
Even before learning that his fall tuition would be fully covered, Porter spoke with NBC affiliate KCBD-TV in Lubbock and reflected on his instant connection with the three-time Super Bowl MVP.
“We’re bros now,” he joked.
From a once-in-a-lifetime putt to a once-in-a-lifetime moment with Mahomes, Porter’s story is one he—and the Texas Tech community—won’t forget anytime soon.
