The opening shot of TGL – the tech-infused golf league dreamt up by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy – will be hit on Tuesday night, as six of the PGA Tour’s top stars go head to head in the debut of arena golf.
The concept has been created by TMRW Sports, the company founded by Woods, McIlroy and media executive Mike McCarley, taking the game of golf indoors to a 1,500-capacity arena. Woods and McIlroy are among the players taking part in TGL, although fans will have to wait a few weeks before they and their teams compete in their first match.
TGL’s inaugural event will see The Bay Golf Club take on New York Golf Club. The Bay – part-owned by Steph Curry and Klay Thompson – will be represented by Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Aberg, while Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler and Matt Fitzpatrick will be teeing it up for New York.

What is TGL?
TGL is a golf league with six teams comprised of 24 of the PGA Tour’s top stars. Its events will be played on Monday and Tuesday nights over the next three months, with the bespoke SoFi Center arena in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida hosting the matches.
Playing custom-designed holes, the players will hit longer shots into a giant simulator the size of a five-story building before turning their attention to the “GreenZone,” a short-game area the size of four basketball courts which features a dynamic, rotating green that changes orientation and topography depending on the hole being played.
The teams will play 15-hole made-for-TV matches, which are set to take around two hours. The players will be mic’d up as they play nine holes of alternate shot and six holes of singles.
What do the players think?
Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, told Mirror Sports that Woods and McIlroy have created a “totally different sport” and he believes fans are sure to be entertained by what TGL has to offer.
“To see [the arena] in person is so different than seeing it on a phone or via social media. I walked in, they kind of did a simulated walk-up song, you walk through the tunnel, they’re explaining what it’s going to be like and then you walk out and you look,” he said.
“”The best example I could give you is I felt like an NBA player or an NFL player walking out in the stadium for the first time, and everyone’s looking at you, and you’re just center stage. And then obviously seeing the massive simulator and the green and it’s amazing.”
