The Denver Broncos look to have finally found their quarterback of the future in the first competent signal-caller that they’ve been able to have under center since Peyton Manning retired…with he himself proving to be right prior to the season beginning.
When the Broncos selected Bo Nix with the 12th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he had, somewhat incredibly, been the sixth quarterback taken in the class and had been seen as a bit of a reach by many analysts.
Although he had been a finalist for the Heisman Trophy after putting in a sensational final season with Oregon with 45 touchdowns to just three interceptions, Nix had operated in a very quarterback-friendly offense with the Ducks. He had been benched while in a pro-style offense and eventually transferring away from Auburn.
His time with the Tigers had many worrying about the player he could turn back into once being away from Oregon’s offense, but all he has done with the Broncos is impress – throwing for 25 touchdowns to 12 interceptions in his rookie season and potentially leading the team to the playoffs.
Heading into the season, many had seen the Broncos as potential strugglers in the AFC, with some even projecting them to potentially finish with the number one draft pick – essentially having the worst record in the league. But if they defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in the final week of the season, they’ll finish with 10 wins and make it into the postseason, with fans going into 2025 being incredibly excited about Nix.
Prior to the season, that was the exact sentiments from Manning himself. Speaking in the offseason, Manning has said: “Im super happy for Nix to be here. I think its a great fit for him and I can tell how excited Sean Payton is to have Bo here.
“I think the quarterback position is in good shape, and I think Seans system is extremely quarterback-friendly. I never played in it, but played against it and watched it and know the success that Drew Brees had and Tony Romo had. Its the kind of system Id like to play in.”
While Nix has had an impressive season for the Broncos, doubters remain around his game going into the future due to the nature of some of his turnovers while getting away with some errand throws this season.
But if he’s able to continue with the output that he’s shown this season, paired with the Broncos’ ascending defense, the team looks to be in good stead to compete for the playoffs through the next few seasons – having cap space to build around their exciting quarterback while on his rookie-scale deal.
