Donald Trump has demanded the NFL get rid of the new kickoff rule, which was brought into play for the first time in the 2024 season.

At one of his former rallies before going into the November 5 election date as the Republican candidate, Trump took time out to spoke on the NFL after appearing at a Pittsburgh Steelers game while bemoaning the new kickoff format.

An avid football fan, who almost became the owner of the Buffalo Bills in 2014, which would have likely seen him never go into politics had he been successful, Trump admitted he was no fan of the new kickoff rules – which sees players line up just five yards away from each other while not being allowed to engage until the kick has been received.

When speaking on his race against Democratic leader Kamala Harris, Trump said: “We’re starting 15 yards off the field, we’re not starting from the 20… And speaking of football, maybe we can get the NFL to drop that ridiculous kickoff setting… I mean, what the hell are they doing? I watched it the other day, they kicked off and nobody moved! What is that?!”

And speaking on the Bussin with the Boys podcast, Trump also said on the new rule: “I think it’s terrible. What are they doing? I think it’s ugly, it doesn’t look like football.”

And once again this week, Trump has taken to Truth Social to bemoan the rule, writing: “The NFL should get rid of the ridiculous new Kickoff rule!”

Donald Trump wants the NFL to scrap the new ‘dynamic kickoff’ rule

The new kickoff rule, which has been brandished as “dynamic kickoffs,” was decided upon in a majority vote by NFL teams in a bid to increase the kickoff return rate while still prioritizing player safety.

While players cannot move until the ball is caught or lands in the endzone, the returner choosing to catch the ball and not return it now sees offenses start at the 30-yard line – rather than starting at the 25 and 20-yard lines in recent years.
