Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will undergo an MRI after suffering a hamstring injury during Sunday’s 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.
Archer noted that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones called it a “high hamstring injury.”
Prescott discussed the injury with reporters after the game.
“I felt something pull,” Prescott told reporters, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “I felt something I’ve never felt.”
While it’s not clear what Prescott’s status will be moving forward, Jones expressed his concern to reporters after the game:
Prescott was ruled out in the second half, with Cooper Rush finishing the game at quarterback.
Fox Sports sideline reporter Pam Oliver relayed the news on Prescott, who had his hand checked out on the sideline as well.
Prescott completed 18-of-24 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown before exiting in between the third and fourth quarters. For the season, he’s completed 185-of-286 passes for 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions for a Cowboys team that entered Sunday with a 3-4 record.
The former Mississippi State star is in his ninth season with Dallas, making three Pro Bowls and leading the NFL with 36 passing touchdowns in 2023. Prescott also won the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2022.
Prescott has previously missed time for injuries on two occasions.
The first one resulted in a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle after a tackle during an Oct. 11, 2020 game against the New York Giants. Prescott missed the remainder of the season but returned in time for the 2021 campaign.
Prescott also sat five games in the 2022 season after suffering a fractured right thumb in his team’s Week 1 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Otherwise, he’s enjoyed a clean bill of health.
Without him, the Cowboys turn to Cooper Rush, who took over for Prescott when he sat during the 2022 season.
The 30-year-old Rush has played with Dallas since 2017, save for a very brief stint on the New York Giants in 2020. During the 2022 season, Rush completed 94-of-162 passes for 1,051 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Dallas went 4-1 under his watch.
