Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley pulled off a backward hurdle on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. When reacting to the highlight, CBS analyst Jason McCourty couldn’t help but feel sorry for the New York Giants.

At the start of the second quarter, the Eagles were 3rd-and-6 and quarterback Jalen Hurts threw the ball out wide to Barkley in the hopes he could secure a first down. Not only did Barkley pick up 12 yards on the play, he hurdled Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones while facing the wrong way in a stunning display of athleticism.

It was another big game for Barkley, who had 159 rushing yards and a touchdown while also contributing in the air. Barkley had 40 receiving yards and a touchdown, as he helped Philadelphia to a 28-23 win over Jacksonville.

While reacting to the highlight, McCourty couldn’t help but poke fun at the Giants for letting Barkley leave as a free agent in the offseason. “Poor Giants fans that are just at home watching as Saquon Barkley is just doing what he does,” McCourty said on the CBS broadcast.

The Giants selected Barkley second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, which raised eyebrows at the time due to his position as a running back. Barkley repaid the faith shown by the Giants in his rookie season, rushing for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Barkley ended up winning 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year that season, and he’s since proved himself as one of the top dual-threat players in the league. However, when it came to dealing with Barkley’s extension the Giants frustrated the running back.

They placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Barkley in 2023, but the running back waited four months to sign the tender after holding out for an extension. Barkley pushed for an extension as he wanted to remain in New York, but general manager Joe Schoen wasn’t willing to comply with his demands.

Schoen suggested that Barkley enter the market to find out his true worth, but the stunt backfired when their NFC East rivals came in with a teasing offer. Barkey agreed to a three-year, $37.75 million contract in March 2024 with $26 million in guaranteed money.

Barkley had eight touchdowns in as many games with the Eagles and is fast approaching 1,000 rushing yards with just under half of the season left to play. The ordeal has left Giants fans frustrated as the franchise prioritized signing quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million extension.

“It felt like the only way the Giants wanted me (was) if I was able to go show my worth to someone,” Barkley told The Athletic when reflecting on his exit. “Like, I (had) to go prove that a team would want to pay me, so then, maybe, they would want to pay me. I kind of felt like it was a little disrespectful, to be honest. Because it’s kind of like a slap in the face.”
