On a somber Thursday evening, the sports community was struck with grief upon learning of the passing of South Florida men’s basketball head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim, who died unexpectedly at the age of 43. Known for his passion, dedication, and influence both on and off the court, Abdur-Rahim’s untimely death has left a deep void within the USF community and beyond.

Abdur-Rahim was just beginning his journey with the USF Bulls, heading into his second season after a promising debut in which he led the team to an impressive 25-8 record, guiding them to an NIT appearance.

His remarkable impact on the program was evident, as he quickly brought a renewed spirit and sense of purpose to the team.

Prior to joining USF, he served as head coach at Kennesaw State, where he took a struggling program through challenging seasons and ultimately led them to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023, a remarkable turnaround that earned him admiration across college basketball.

While details surrounding his passing remain limited, it has been reported that Abdur-Rahim died from complications following a medical procedure at a hospital in Tampa.

His sudden death has shaken the USF community, leaving many, especially his players and colleagues, grappling with the difficult reality of losing a beloved mentor and friend so close to the start of the basketball season.

With the season opener against Florida just weeks away, the emotional toll on his team is immeasurable, and there are ongoing discussions about the path forward.

More than a coach, Abdur-Rahim was widely respected as an extraordinary individual, known for his unwavering commitment to fostering personal and athletic growth in his players.

His influence reached beyond basketball; he was a mentor who believed in teaching life lessons through sport, and his dedication to uplifting those around him earned him the love and respect of everyone in his circle.

USF Athletic Director Michael Kelly shared his profound sadness, saying, “All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim. He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation.

Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the university, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss.”

In addition, American Athletic Conference commissioner Tim Pernetti issued a heartfelt statement, expressing the deep sense of loss felt within the college basketball community: “Amir was only in our conference for one year, but he made such a profound impact on so many people, both on the court and in the community, simply by treating everyone with kindness, dignity, and respect.”

The scheduled November 4 season opener remains under review, as the university considers the best way forward for the team. Abdur-Rahim’s legacy, however, is certain to endure as his influence continues to resonate through his players, colleagues, and all who knew him.

The entire USF community, along with fans and colleagues nationwide, now mourns the loss of a remarkable leader, mentor, and friend. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
