The Kansas City Chiefs are adding another weapon to Patrick Mahomes’ offense, with the defending NFL champions finalizing a trade for three-time, first-team All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins.

According to ESPN, the Chiefs are looking to close a trade with the Tennessee Titans for the 32-year-old wide receiver this week with Kansas City giving up a conditional fourth-round NFL Draft pick. The switch would see Hopkins secure a huge upgrade on offense, going from receiving throws from Will Levis and Mason Rudolph to two-time NFL MVP Mahomes.

Hopkins’ time in Tennessee lasted just over a year, having joined the franchise in July 2023 on a two-year, $26 million contract. Last season, he managed seven receiving touchdowns for 1,057 yards.

However, this season, Hopkins’ production and usage have been lower, with the Titans’ offensive line faltering. Hopkins has just one touchdown for 173 yards.

The Chiefs were in need of offensive acquisitions despite their 6-0 unbeaten start to 2024. Kansas City lost wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster recently and still has Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, and running back Isiah Pacheco still out with injuries.

Reports suggested that the Los Angeles Rams’ star wide receiver Cooper Kupp was on the Chiefs’ radar for a potential trade. The LA Rams are said to be “open to taking on some salary to get a trade done,” The Athletic claimed. In the Rams’ Super Bowl-winning season of 2021, Kupp’s 2,425 receiving yards in the season and postseason combined that campaign set an NFL record. He was also named the Super Bowl MVP.

Quarterback Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl winner, three-time Super Bowl MVP, and two-time NFL MVP has made the most of what he’s been left with in the early stages of 2024, with his offense ravaged by injuries. In Kansas City’s last game, they convincingly won their repeat Super Bowl LVIII matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on the road.

The Chiefs ran out 28-18 winners over Brock Purdy and Co. in San Francisco. Mahomes hasn’t been at his best this season, neither has tight end Travis Kelce. The QB has thrown more interceptions (8) than he has touchdown passes (6). And Kelce is yet to score a touchdown in 2024.

Despite the win over the Niners, Mahomes back-to-back games without a TD pass for just the second time in his career. “I just don’t think it’s normal for what you’ve seen from us because there’s not a lot of passing touchdowns,” Mahomes said. “There’s been a lot of turnovers, especially by me. I think it’s just showing the versatility of our team. It’s not just about me, it’s not just about the stats and the light show and stuff like that.

“It’s about playing team football and I believe if we continue to work, we’ll get better offensively throwing the ball down the field. But until then, it’s nice to know that we have a great running game, we’ve got a great defense and we’re able to execute whenever the time comes to win football games.”
