The Minnesota Lynx suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to the New York Liberty in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals, a game filled with tension, intensity, and some highly debated officiating. After the loss, Lynx star Napheesa Collier took to Instagram to share a series of photos commemorating the team’s incredible journey to the finals, but she also used the platform to subtly address some of the controversial calls that marred the final moments of the game.

In a post that began with 13 photos celebrating the team’s season and highlighting the joyous moments, the final three images took a sharp turn, focusing on the critical officiating decisions that impacted the outcome of Game 5.

One particularly notable image featured her teammate Alanna Smith’s foul on Liberty star Breanna Stewart in the closing seconds of regulation. The Lynx had challenged the foul call, hoping for a reversal, but the call was upheld. Stewart proceeded to sink the free throws that sent the game into overtime, ultimately paving the way for the Liberty’s victory.

Collier’s post didn’t outright criticize the officiating, but the inclusion of these photos made her feelings clear. It was a subtle yet pointed way of expressing frustration over the way the game ended. Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve had been far more vocal about the officiating after the game, claiming that the referees had “stolen” the game from her team. By posting a picture of Smith’s foul on Stewart, it’s evident Collier shares that sentiment.

In the caption, Collier reflected on the season and her love for the team but hinted at the painful ending: “Gut-wrenching end to an incredible season. I have loved every minute of being around this team. I love you guys so much; you have made this the most incredible year. Huge thank you to our coaches and staff, you guys are amazing. And thanks to all the fans for supporting us this season, we’ll be back.”

Collier wasn’t alone in her frustration. Many fans, including NBA star LeBron James, voiced their opinion that the foul on Stewart was questionable and possibly undeserved. James and other fans felt that the officials had made a mistake in the call, adding fuel to the debate over how the game was officiated.

The other controversial calls Collier highlighted in her Instagram post included a non-call when Kayla Thornton appeared to hit Collier in the face while she was driving to the basket. Another image showcased a foul call on Alanna Smith for her defense on Jonquel Jones, another key moment in the game that left many Lynx fans and players questioning the officiating.

While Collier’s post was filled with gratitude and pride for her team, it also subtly called attention to the frustrations felt by many within the Lynx organization and their fanbase.

As Minnesota reflects on their impressive season, they will undoubtedly carry the sting of this loss and the controversial ending with them, fueling their determination to return stronger next season.
