Patrick and Brittany Mahomes brought a bit of star power to Friday night high school football, making a surprise appearance at a local game ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ upcoming clash with the San Francisco 49ers. The couple, along with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and defensive tackle Chris Jones, attended the game to support the sons of Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and defensive backs coach Dave Merritt.
Nagy’s son, Tate, was the quarterback for Blue Valley West, while Merritt’s son, Dawson, played as a defensive back. With Tate under center, the game came down to the wire in an exhilarating finish.
Blue Valley West pulled off a thrilling 35-34 victory, with Tate leading a clutch 80-yard drive in the final moments of the game—right in front of one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes.
Patrick seemed to be enjoying some family time during the game, with Brittany sharing a heartwarming moment on Instagram. She posted a picture of Patrick holding their son, Bronze, on his lap, captioned “Friday Night Lights” in a nod to the iconic book and TV series about high school football.
The Mahomes family’s outing was a brief respite before Patrick and the Chiefs headed to California for their highly anticipated Super Bowl rematch against the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs, sitting at a perfect 5-0 after a strong start to the season, are heading into Week 7 after enjoying a bye the previous week.
While the Chiefs are in top form, the 49ers are dealing with injury challenges, most notably the absence of star running back Christian McCaffrey, who is recovering from Achilles tendonitis. Despite this setback, the game promises to be a significant regular-season showdown between two top teams.
Mahomes acknowledged the magnitude of the matchup during a press conference earlier in the week. “I think it’s as big of a regular-season game as you can play in,” he said. “We understand that it’s going to take our best to win. You just have to have extreme focus.”
Reflecting on the competitive history between the Chiefs and 49ers, Mahomes added, “When you have two great football teams that meet up in the Super Bowl and in all these big games, there’s going to be a history. We know how good this football team is, and we have a ton of respect for them.”
As the Chiefs prepare for one of the most anticipated matchups of the season, the Mahomes family made the most of their downtime, blending football and family at a high school game under the Friday night lights.
