Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler found himself in legal trouble this week after being arrested in Tennessee. According to jail records obtained by TMZ, the 41-year-old was taken into custody on Thursday evening following a traffic stop in Franklin, Tenn., where he faced multiple charges.
Authorities charged Cutler with driving under the influence (DUI), possession of a handgun while under the influence, failure to exercise due care, and violation of the state’s implied consent law, which involves refusing to take a blood alcohol test.
After being processed at the Williamson County Jail, Cutler was released shortly thereafter upon posting a $5,000 bond according to TMZ. This incident marks a significant legal challenge for the former NFL star, who has largely stayed out of trouble in the public eye since his retirement from professional football.
Cutler’s NFL career spanned over a decade, from 2006 to 2017. He was initially drafted 11th overall by the Denver Broncos in 2006, where he spent three seasons before being traded to the Chicago Bears.
Cutler’s most significant tenure came with the Bears, where he played for eight seasons and set several franchise records, including most career passing yards and touchdowns. In 2017, he briefly came out of retirement to play for the Miami Dolphins, officially ending his career that same season.

One of Cutler’s most notable seasons came in 2008 with the Broncos, when he threw for an impressive 4,526 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions, earning his first and only Pro Bowl selection.
A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Cutler was known for his strong arm, durability, and at times controversial demeanor both on and off the field.
In addition to his NFL career, Cutler became a household name through his role in the reality show “Very Cavallari,” which chronicled his life with then-wife Kristin Cavallari. The show provided a behind-the-scenes look at their marriage, parenting, and personal ventures.
However, in April 2020, the couple announced their decision to divorce after 10 years of marriage. They share three children together and have since navigated co-parenting in the public spotlight.
Beyond reality television, Cutler also once aspired to have a career in broadcasting after retiring from football.
Though he initially secured a deal with FOX Sports, Cutler ultimately did not pursue the broadcasting path after briefly returning to the NFL in 2017. Since his retirement, Cutler has remained active in various ventures but has largely stayed out of the public eye until this recent arrest.
The arrest raises questions about Cutler’s future as he now faces potential legal consequences for the charges filed against him.
