“I don’t know where they go from here,” ESPN announcer Troy Aikman said in the aftermath of the New York Jets’ Monday Night Football defeat to the Buffalo Bills.

Less than 24 hours later, we have an answer. The Jets are in the process of completing a blockbuster trade to acquire superstar wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Three-time All-Pro Adams is headed to “Gang Green” in exchange for a conditional third-round pick, which could become a second-rounder depending on his performance. The move to acquire the 31-year-old, who forged an electric partnership with Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a Green Bay Packers jersey, comes just hours after Monday’s devastating 23-20 defeat to the Bills at MetLife Stadium.

The result – a product of sloppiness across the board and two costly Greg Zuerlein field goal misses – sent the Jets to 2-4 on the season, having already pressed the panic button to fire head coach Robert Saleh last week. They have responded to Monday’s defeat with yet more urgency, pulling off the biggest in-season trade in recent years.

General manager Joe Douglas and interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich will be desperate for Adams’ imminent arrival to spark a change in momentum for the Jets as they vie to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Three-time Super Bowl champion Aikman had little optimism about the Jets’ chances of rescuing their season after Monday’s defeat.

“I don’t know where they go from here, quite honestly, because of this week with all the changes and you have some momentum coming in and you start to do things better than you had done them,” Aikman said.

“We see that from time to time when an interim head coach takes over and how a team might respond to that. But to lose the game the way they did with the penalties and the missed field goals and not capitalizing in the red zone.

“All those things, I think it’s going to be really hard on them with a short week now. I can see this totally unraveling. Maybe that won’t happen and I know the players won’t agree with that, but I could see it happening because they put so much into this week and winning a game and getting back on track.

“The owner says this is the best team he has had in 25 years, but they didn’t get it done and they are right back where they were and what is the answer for them? They don’t have it.”

The Jets return to action with another primetime game in Week 7, traveling to Accrisure Stadium to take on Justin Fields and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football. Although Adams’ arrival will provide a timely boost, it has the makings of a must-win game for Rodgers and the Jets.
