Amid a three-game losing streak, the New York Jets are acquiring one of the best wide receivers in the NFL in hopes of turning things around.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets are finalizing a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for star wideout Davante Adams in exchange for a conditional third-round pick that can become a second-rounder based on performance, though the year wasn’t specified.
Following Adams’ arrival, the Jets’ offensive skill position depth chart now looks like this:
QB: Aaron Rodgers, Tyrod Taylor
RB: Breece Hall, Braelon Allen
WR: Garrett Wilson, Xavier Gipson
WR: Davante Adams, Mike Williams
WR: Allen Lazard, Malachi Corley
TE: Tyler Conklin, Jeremy Ruckert
Per Spotrac, by adding Adams’ $11.6 million 2024 salary to the roster, New York now has an adjusted salary cap of $261.1 million with $5.6 million in remaining cap space.
As for their remaining draft picks, the Jets are still in good shape, as they own all of their selections in the first six rounds of the 2025 draft. They also own an extra sixth-rounder and a seventh-rounder from the Kansas City Chiefs.
New York had owned an extra third-round pick from the Detroit Lions that made one of the two expendable in the deal with Las Vegas. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the pick becomes a second-rounder if Adams receives first- or second-team All-Pro honors or if he’s on the active roster when the team plays in the AFC Championship or Super Bowl.
The Raiders own all of their picks in the 2025 draft and now have $37.6 million in cap space with $46.5 million in dead money following Adams’ departure. Plus, the team is set to have serious spending power next offseason with Adams off the books.
The team’s receiving corps is a bit thin with Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker and DJ Turner on the outside, so rookie tight end Brock Bowers is likely to become the focal point of the passing attack led by quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who replaced Gardner Minshew as the starter.
Tuesday’s deal reunites Adams with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as the two of them developed a special connection during their time together with the Green Bay Packers. The Jets are hoping they will produce at the same level as they try to end their 13-year playoff drought.
Acquiring Adams is the latest move in a tumultuous week for New York that saw head coach Robert Saleh get fired last Tuesday. The team failed to improve in its first game under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, losing to the Buffalo Bills 23-20 on Monday Night Football.
Perhaps Adams will be able to help the Jets get back on track when they meet the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football in Week 7.
