The New York Jets are “hopeful” wide receiver Davante Adams can make his team debut during Sunday’s Week 7 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes.
Adams, who was reportedly traded on Tuesday from the Las Vegas Raiders, has not played since Week 3 due to a hamstring injury.
Hughes noted the wideout “still needs to pass a physical.”
Adams flew to New Jersey on Monday night and was present at the Jets’ training center on Tuesday, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
The Jets reportedly traded a conditional third-rounder to acquire him as a top target for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Adams suffered a hamstring injury during Raiders practice ahead of Week 4, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He has been regularly listed as “questionable” on Raiders’ injury reports since then.
Schefter has repeatedly reported since then that Adams has been sidelined by his hamstring injury, and not his trade request, which was reportedly submitted to the Raiders on Sept. 30. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport similarly wrote ahead of Week 5 that Adams was likely to “continue to play for Las Vegas when healthy.”
Both Schefter and Rapoport also reported that Adams would prefer to play with the Jets, where he could work with his former Green Bay Packers teammate Rodgers.
Adams was off to a relatively slow start to the 2024 season in Las Vegas, having made 18 catches for 209 yards and one touchdown through three games as a target for since-benched starter Gardner Minshew in Las Vegas.
Adams was given his most recent Pro Bowl nod during his 2022 campaign for the Raiders. The wideout will look to return to his former levels of production now that he will be catching passes from Rodgers, who threw a season-high 294 yards in Monday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Their connection could be put to the test for the first time against the Steelers’ defense. The AFC North team has so far been excellent at limiting other teams on the ground, but has at times struggled to limit opposing quarterbacks’ pass options during their 4-2 start to the season.
Meanwhile, the Jets will hope adding an elite target to their roster will allow the team to bounce back from their 2-4 season-opening record and edge out the 2-3 Miami Dolphins for a top-two spot in the AFC East.
