Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard has very high expectations for the reunion of Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers with the New York Jets.
Lillard wrote on X that Adams will “go do a Randy Moss in New England” now that he is a member of the Jets.
The Jets announced on Tuesday they acquired Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional 2025 third-round draft pick.
Lillard, who is from Oakland, has maintained his Raiders fandom even after the team moved to Las Vegas in January 2020. It’s unclear if that will continue after he vowed to be “done” if they only traded him for a second-round draft pick.
Unfortunately for Lillard, the Raiders might not even get a second-round pick. The third-round pick they got can become a second-rounder if Adams hits any individual or team-based performance incentives.
While a conference championship or Super Bowl appearance for the Jets can’t be ruled out of the equation, the odds of Adams making the All-Pro team would seem to be low since he’s already missed three games due to a hamstring injury.
But if, as Lillard said, Adams plays the rest of this season like Randy Moss did his first year with the New England Patriots in 2007, an All-Pro selection would be on the table.
Moss was traded by the Raiders to the Patriots in April 2007. He had one of the greatest seasons ever for a wide receiver with 1,493 yards and a single-season record 23 touchdown catches for the New England team that went 16-0 in the regular season.
The Jets still have 11 games remaining this season. In the last 11 meaningful regular-season games that Adams and Rodgers played together from Weeks 5 through 17 in 2021 with the Green Bay Packers, Adams had 86 receptions for 1,125 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Things are very different for both players now. The ’21 Packers had Matt LaFleur as head coach and offensive play-caller. The Jets currently have Jeff Ulbrich as their interim head coach and Todd Downing calling plays.
Rodgers is less than two months away from his 41st birthday and was limited by an ankle injury leading up to Monday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. Adams is 31 and hasn’t averaged more than 12 yards per reception since the 2022 season.
However things play out for the Jets this season, let’s hope Lillard can find something to enjoy about football since the Raiders don’t seem to be playoff contenders this season.
