Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh experienced a concerning health scare on Sunday when he was forced to step away from the sidelines during the game against the Denver Broncos. What initially seemed like a simple illness quickly became more serious when Harbaugh later revealed that he suffers from a heart condition known as atrial flutter.
At first, Harbaugh’s absence from the game sparked some light-hearted speculation, especially when he returned to the sidelines, leading some to joke that the coach had simply needed a quick restroom break.
However, after the game, Harbaugh disclosed the real reason for his sudden departure—he had experienced an atrial flutter, a type of heart arrhythmia that caused his heart to beat irregularly during the game.
The Mayo Clinic describes atrial flutter as a heart rhythm disorder similar to atrial fibrillation (AFib), though in atrial flutter, the heart rhythm is typically more organized and less chaotic than in AFib. While the condition may not always present noticeable symptoms, some people experience a rapid, pounding heartbeat, chest pain, or even fainting. Treatment can involve medication, a heart procedure called ablation, or a combination of both.

Following the game, Harbaugh met with a cardiologist on Monday, who confirmed his diagnosis. To monitor his heart more closely, he wore a heart monitor during his weekly press conference, where he reassured the media that he plans to continue coaching while undergoing treatment.
“That’s the issue I’ve had: It spikes way up for a certain amount of time and then goes too low,” Harbaugh explained, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic. “So there’s medicine now that’ll keep it right in the sweet spot.”
Harbaugh also shared that this wasn’t the first time he’s dealt with such an issue. He recounted two previous incidents—one in 1999 when he was a player for the Indianapolis Colts, and another in 2012 during his tenure as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. After each of those episodes, Harbaugh underwent an ablation procedure to destroy the heart tissue causing the arrhythmia.
With the experience of those prior incidents, Harbaugh expressed confidence in his ability to manage his condition moving forward. “I now have a real good understanding of just what to do, how it needs to be treated with medicine or ablation or both,” he said. “Pretty confident on this one that I know what it is and how to deal with it. But as always, we’ll trust the doctors and they’ll tell me what to do.”
Despite the serious nature of his health condition, Harbaugh made it clear that stepping away from coaching isn’t on the table right now. He’s committed to continuing his role with the Chargers while undergoing treatment, demonstrating the same resilience and determination that have defined his long coaching career.
Fans and players alike will be watching closely as Harbaugh navigates this health challenge, but for now, the coach is focused on staying on the sidelines and leading his team while working closely with his doctors to manage his condition.
