A small piece of history was made as the Detriot Lions defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6 – with the 47-9 demolition of their rivals the first time that scoreline has been recorded in the NFL.
Spectators at AT&T Stadium were witness to the 1,087th unique score since the league’s inception as the hosts fell to a wounding loss on home turf. The Lions dominated proceedings with five touchdowns and four field goals, while the Cowboys faltered with their points coming via three field goals.
With the margin of defeat standing at 38 points at the end of the game, this deficit represented the worst total since owner Jerry Jones took over in Dallas back in 1989. A third scorigami of the campaign so far, this was also the second time the Cowboys have been involved in a game with a unique score – with their 47-19 loss to the Saints in Week 2 falling into this category too.

Perhaps the most significant talking point following the clash was the broken left tibia sustained by Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson in the third quarter. He had collided with teammate Alim McNeill, with his resulting injury meaning he was carted off and taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Providing an update on the sitution, Detroit head coach Dan Campbell said: “That’s tough. You know, it was tough. And he’s in good hands right now, he’s being taken care of. He’ll stay back here (in Dallas). You know, obviously he’s going to be down for a while. So that’s tough, man. ‘It’s hard when you lose somebody like him. But we’ll know a lot more after this and obviously wish him the best.
‘It’s hard for everybody when you’re standing there and that’s one of yours and something like that happens. If you dwell on that too much and you start playing a little timid, that’s when you get hurt. So guys snapped right back in and they lived in the moment where we’re on.”

Meanwhile, Dallas owner Jones has fielded questions over whether he is considering relieving head coach Mike McCarthy of his duties following the loss. Addressing the subject to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, he said: “Oh, I haven’t even considered that, I’m not considering that so you’re clear, I’m not considering that.
“Do you think I’m an idiot? Do you? OK? Well, I’m not gonna hypothetical with you about what I consider coaching change in light of the timing we’re sitting here with, I’m not at all.”
Still, the veteran businessman did acknowledge that the Cowboys players and coaching staff will need to re-group after a third home loss of the seasons so far. Speaking to the New York Post, Jones said: “We’ve got to assess and we’ve certainly got a bye week, but there’s nothing magic about a bye week.
“You can do some things differently within three days of some of the things that bit us out there today. This was very concerning and it was very humbling and it felt bad because of all of our great fans, especially the ones in the stadium and certainly the ones that are all about the Cowboys.”
