Baker Mayfield had a ruthless response to Texas players Anthony Hill Jr. and Barryn Sorrell after they dropped his jersey at midfield and planted a flag on it after Saturday’s Red River Rivalry blowout of Oklahoma on Saturday.

Sooners legend Mayfield, quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, watched from afar as his beloved alma mater was outclassed by the Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl, suffering a 34-3 defeat.

Defensive players Hill and Sorrell had Mayfield on their minds as the clock hit zeroes and the No. 1 team in the nation improved to 6-0, placing his No. 6 Sooners jersey on the halfway line and planting a huge Longhorns flag on top of it.

Needless to say, former No. 1 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner Mayfield was not impressed, and he mustered a brutal response in his press conference after the Bucs’ blowout win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

“Just a kid from Austin, Texas that went to Oklahoma, won his last two Red River games and being rent-free in their heads for almost a decade, yeah,” Mayfield said when asked for his thoughts on the Longhorns’ antics.

Defensive tackle Hill had a game-high 11 tackles and two sacks in Saturday’s statement win, and he took to social media after the game with an image of the torn Mayfield jersey, adding the caption: “Texas fears nobody”.

He had no remorse when asked about his decision to take aim at Mayfield. He said: “I just felt like it was the right thing for me to do. I’d seen all the stuff [Oklahoma] posted last year, so I felt like it was right for me to get a little touch of something on them.”

After losing his first two games against Texas – the first with Texas Tech in 2013 before transferring to the Sooners a year later – Mayfield secured back-to-back wins over the Longhorns in his final two seasons at the collegiate level.

His Buccaneers continued their stellar start to the season on Sunday, romping to a 51-27 road victory at NFC South rivals the Saints. Mayfield overcame three first-half interceptions to score 27 unanswered second-half points, finishing with 325 yards and four touchdowns to improve to 4-2 on the year.

He said: “That was a full group effort on offense,” said QB Baker Mayfield. “Obviously we had a few bad situations there with some tipped balls. The first interception was definitely the worst one. Just not a good decision. The guy had it covered up pretty well.

“Don’t flinch. There’s going to be ups and downs but that’s why you play 60 minutes. There are two halves for a reason. Just regroup and find a way.”
