Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic was voted the best point guard in the NBA, ahead of Golden State Warriors rival and future Hall of Famer Steph Curry.

Doncic, 25, was a key cog to the 2023/24 Mavs team that reached the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, where they were defeated 4-1. Across the season, the Slovenian basketball star averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists in 70 games.

In the NBA Finals, Doncic didn’t dip below 25 points in the five-game series with the Celtics. NBA GMs voted Doncic as the league’s best point guard heading into the 2024/25 season, ahead of the likes of Curry, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson.

Doncic received 37% of the vote, followed by Gilgeous-Alexander with 30%, Curry with 23%, and Brunson with 10%. Curry was voted the best point guard in the league the season prior with a resounding 63%.

However, the Warriors’ struggles last season undoubtedly played a factor. The Warriors missed the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2021 last term, while Curry averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 74 games.

Curry did come away with some gold this year, though. He was part of Team USA’s Olympic basketball title defense in the Paris Games this summer. It was Curry’s first-ever Olympic Games and he showed up big, especially in the final against host nation France.

Curry scored a game-high 24 points, including shooting 8 for 12 for 3 points. In GM voting, Curry also scored some winshaving been overwhelmingly voted as the NBA’s best pure shooter at 87%, and he was also voted as the best player at moving without the ball at 83%.

Curry was also voted as the NBA’s best leader at 33%, taking the crown off LeBron James, who won it the season prior. A game-winning shot on the line? A whopping 40% of NBA GMs said they’d want the ball in Curry’s hands.

“Everything happens for a reason and the journey gives you all types of different experiences along the way,” Curry said on his 23/24 season, including the Olympics. “But this summer’s been amazing, just coming off a tough NBA year to experiencing what we did getting a win in the Olympics.”

His Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, was also in charge of Team USA in the summer. “I think we might be the only team in the world whose fans are ashamed of them if they get a silver medal,” he said. “That’s the pressure that we face. But our players, and you saw Steph, they love the pressure. They appreciate this atmosphere and they were fantastic.”
