Actor Rob Schneider has faced backlash for a controversial post following the announcement of NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo’s death at age 58 from brain cancer. Known for his vocal anti-vaccination stance, Schneider sparked outrage by insinuating that COVID-19 vaccines contributed to the beloved athlete’s passing.
On Monday, shortly after the NBA confirmed Mutombo’s death, Schneider quote-tweeted a 2021 post from Mutombo, in which the basketball legend encouraged vaccination during the pandemic. Instead of paying tribute to Mutombo’s legacy, Schneider used the occasion to further his anti-vaccine agenda, stating: “Rest in Peace… I’m sure this is just (another) coincidence. But I took a pass on the Jab and I’m gonna not let anyone I know (and who will Listen) get it either!”
His comments have drawn criticism for being insensitive and exploiting a tragic event to promote his beliefs.
The tweet quickly sparked outrage, with many criticizing Schneider for making an inappropriate and disrespectful remark, particularly in light of Mutombo’s long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Mutombo, an 18-season NBA veteran and a dedicated humanitarian, had been vocal during the pandemic about the importance of wearing masks and taking necessary precautions to protect the community. In stark contrast, Schneider implied—without any evidence—that the COVID-19 vaccine may have played a role in Mutombo’s death, a claim that many found offensive and misleading.
