Angel Reese continued to show love to former Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon online during Game 2 of a WNBA Playoffs series. For Reese, Weatherspoon has been more than just a coach—she’s been a mentor and beloved figure in her life.
Weatherspoon made a special appearance on the jumbotron during the New York Liberty vs. Las Vegas Aces playoff game, receiving a sincere ovation from the crowd. The retired WNBA point guard was a legendary figure in Liberty history. She spent her first seven years with the organization during her playing career from 1997 to 2003.
In that time, the former point guard earned five All-Star appearances and became a fan favorite, known for her leadership on the court. She averaged 5.7 points per game and 5.9 assists during her time in New York, with a legacy remembered as one of the best floor generals in team history.

Reese responded to her ex-coaches tribute on social media by retweeting the video with a sad face emoji followed by a heart. The display of emotion came just days after the Sky rookie and WNBA All-Star said she was heartbroken after the team’s official decision last Sunday.
“I’m heartbroken. I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life,” wrote Reese. “She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me.”
“Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black woman in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job,” she continued. “All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever.”

Sky fans were left puzzled by the team’s decision to part ways with the first-year head coach after a challenging season that saw the team finish with a 13-27 record and miss the playoffs. One fan voiced their anger online, writing, “This was a huge mistake,” while another added, “The Chicago Sky front office is turning me away from being a fan. This is not even about TSpoon. This whole season and previous seasons, we have seen the poor decisions made by the front office.”
The Sky faced adversity throughout the season, with critical injuries playing a significant role in their struggles. Rising star and scoring guard Chennedy Carter missed impactful minutes due to a battle with COVID-19, and Reese saw her debut season cut short after undergoing wrist surgery.
The Sky traded WNBA All-Star and Olympian Kahleah Copper before the season started and dealt veteran floor general Marina Mabrey during the year, leaving the franchise in an endless transition. Reese signed a four-year rookie deal with the franchise with a team option in 2027, making her a restricted free agent in 2028.
