Shohei Ohtani is an outlier among MLB players. Baseball has never seen a player so good at so many aspects of the game, and this feat, which has never happened before, magnifies that.
On Thursday night, in the Dodgers game against the Miami Marlins, Ohtani launched his fiftieth home run of the season. It was important because it made him the first player to hit 50 home runs and have 50 steals in a season.
Of course, a ball with such a monumental story behind it would be extremely valuable, and you can tell that by the way fans run and fight over it.
The video shows at least six different people reaching for the ball after it fell on the ground, with one person crawling on the ground for it. Some people trying to get the ball even came from way out of frame.
The one crawling ended up being the person to come up with it as he pumped his fist into the air with the ball in it.
Now, he has three decisions: either trade it with the Dodgers and Ohtani for it, sell the ball to the highest bidder, or keep it for himself. However, selling it is the most likely option.
Shohei Ohtani Joins A League Of His Own
As mentioned earlier, this feat has never happened before
Only six players in MLB history have hit at least 40 home runs and stole 40 basses in a season. The most recent other than Ohtani was Ronald Acuna Jr in 2023; in the same season, he won MVP.
Of course, a 40-40 season is already impressive enough, and that puts into perspective just how insane it is to have a 50-50 season. It could very well solidify the MVP award for Ohtani.
